What is vf 211?

VF-211, also known as the “Fighting Checkmates,” was a United States Navy fighter squadron established in 1945. The squadron was initially equipped with the F4U-4 Corsair and served primarily in the Korean War and Vietnam War. In 1961, VF-211 transitioned to the F-8 Crusader and operated the aircraft until 1976. The squadron was disbanded in 1995. VF-211 has been awarded multiple unit citations for its service, including the Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Commendation, and Meritorious Unit Commendation.
